Barbara’s nursing career began as a certified nursing assistant shortly after high school. She completed an associate’s degree from a community college in Illinois, baccalaureate degrees in nursing and education/psychology at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, and her Master’s in Nursing in 2004 at University of Missouri-Columbia.
Barbara is board certified in family practice by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She has worked in rural, urban, and federally-qualified health centers as well as employee worksite, urgent, and convenient care settings in several states. In addition to her nursing career, Barbara has more than 25 years’ experience as a licensed massage therapist, Healing Touch Practitioner, aromatherapist, yoga instructor, and AHA CPR instructor.
Practicing at La Familia is of interest to Barbara because of its reputation for service to the Santa Fe and surrounding community, outreach to people of all socioeconomic statuses but especially those of limited means and challenging living situations. The longevity of service of some of the staff at La Familia is a positive indicator of the environment at La Familia. Increasing her Spanish vocabulary and language use is another reason Barbara opted to practice at La Familia.
Barbara likes to bike, hike, and practice yoga, sew, cook, crochet and dance. She is of the Vice President of the Labyrinth Resource Group of Santa Fe. The calming, meditative experience of walking labyrinths, as well as helping to plan, build and maintain them, has long been of interest to Barbara. She also enjoys hand drumming, regularly attends and often hosts community drum gatherings in Santa Fe.
